To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
I started Airvolution Studios 17 years ago after the completion of my Graphic Design studies at The Design School Southern Africa. I was introduced to airbrushing as a part of the design course. My first commission was for custom airbrushed paintings on Harley Davidson bikes for a bike workshop - Pauls American Twins. I then expanded to creating murals of various sizes for the business sector, private residences, entertainment venues, advertising agencies, etc.
Soon after I was offered the opportunity to work with In2structures / Gearhouse (formerly Art of Light), a well known set design company, creating vast sets for shows staged in South African by international performers and artists. I diversified into body painting after being approached by prominent brand names to provide eye-catching advertising for their functions, using the human canvas as a medium. I also design corporate identities, brands, logos, websites and various other projects, as well as the design of my own clothing label...
An atomizer using compressed air to spray a liquid, such as paint, on a surface.
The airbrush is a small, highly precise spray gun for applying paint onto paper or other surfaces to create smooth blending effects of two or more colors in a seamless way. Airbrushed images have a floating quality, with softly defined edges between colors, and between foreground and background colors. A well skilled airbrush artist can produce paintings of photographic realism or can simulate almost any painting medium. Painting at this skill level involves supplementary tools, such as masks and friskets, and very careful planning.
A very large image, such as a painting or enlarged photograph, applied directly to a wall or ceiling.
01. Of, relating to, or resembling a wall.
02. Painted on or applied to a wall.
A mural is a painting on a wall, ceiling, or other large permanent surface. Murals date to prehistoric times. Of the many techniques, the most well known is probably "fresco".
01. A style of painting that gives an illusion of photographic reality.
02. A painting or effect created in this style.
Trompe-l'oeil (French for "trick the eye" from tromper - to deceive and l'oeil - the eye); is an art technique involving extremely realistic imagery in order to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects really exist.
Body painting, or sometimes bodypainting, is a form of body art.
Unlike tattoo and other forms of body art, body painting is temporary, painted onto the human skin, and lasts for only several hours, or at most (in the case of Mehndi or "henna tattoo") a couple of weeks.
Body painting that is limited to the face is known as face painting.
Body painting is also referred to as (a form of) temporary tattoo; large scale or full-body painting is more commonly referred to as body painting, while smaller or more detailed work is generally referred to as temporary tattoos.
